A Wonderful Story From Dave

Although this blog is about Weasel, I wanted to make an exception with this particular post.  Dave emailed me to tell me about his cat Moosie who is also battling pancreatic cancer and in fact, had surgery at the beginning of his treatment plan.  He is doing quite well now and what Dave is providing treatment wise is fantastic.  Dave's story is below.  I hope this helps others:

_______________________________________________________________________
Hey Melissa, thanks for making this blog.  Weasel is very beautiful.  His looks and personality resemble my loving boy that has unfortunately passed.

I have a seven year old male neutered cat named Moosie.  On  August 27th 2013 he stopped eating, and was very lethargic.  He was brought in to our vet, who gave him an xray and discovered a tumor in his body.  The xray didn’t show where the tumor was, so an ultrasound was performed.  The ultrasound looked like a tumor was on one of his lymph nodes.

My vet is an excellent surgeon and very trustworthy.  He recommended surgery to open him up and remove the tumor.  The vet opened Moosie and discovered many tumors covering his entire peritoneum, a membrane which covers the stomach and most of the intestines.  The vet had never seen anything like it in 25 years.  The vet thought the tumors were not cancer.

The lymph nodes turned out to be tumor-free.  It was questionable to whether there was a tumor on the spleen, so it was taken out as a precaution.  The vet explained the spleen is not necessary for the cat to survive, as other organs step in to take over its job.

Right after the surgery, Moosie returned to his old self.  He was very hungry and his energy returned. The tumor samples were sent into the lab, and it turned out it was pancreatic cancer.  The vet was grim about his prognosis, and referred me to a veterinary oncologist.    The oncologist recommended Gemcitabine, a chemotherapy agent, for four weeks, a week off, then four more sessions of Gemcitabine.  The oncologist only had treated 2 cases of pancreatic cancer in five years.  One cat died one month into treatment, the other cat survived for four months.

While our vet did not see a tumor on Moosie’s pancreas, the pancreas was sending out cells that spread through the body.  There might be a tumor inside the pancreas, or not one at all.  In pancreatic cancer, cancer is usually spread to the peritoneum, lymph nodes, and spleen.  Lungs and brain are spared.

Given the low rates of success, I researched pancreatic cancer.  I found this blog as well as other helpful sites.  It has been nine weeks since he came home, and Moosie is doing great.  He is vibrant and full of life.  He was 9 pounds prior to surgery and now is 11.5 pounds.  Here are the things I am doing that have helped him:

Moosie was taking Wellness dry chicken dry food.  I have switched him over to wet Wellness to insure he has more water going through his system.  He also eats organic hardboiled eggs.
He takes 100 mg of B17 Amodalin tablets 2 times a day on an empty stomach(passes to gut easier where it works).  B17(Laetrile) kills many types of cancer, and is particularly great killing pancreatic cancer.

He gets one 500 mg capsule of curcumin w/ peperine a day with food.  Curcumin has proven effective at killing cancer.  The peperine is essential as the curcumin is not readily absorbed in the body.  With the peperine, it is absorbed 2,000 times more.  I give him Nutrigold Tumeric Curcumin Gold:

He gets one Barlean’s Fish oil (pharmaceutical grade) capsule a day, that provides 185mg epa, 115mg dha (20mg of EPA per pound of animal, and 12mg of DHA per pound of animal.)

Daily he gets one black currant oil cap from Now Foods. It provides cancer killing compounds gla and quercetin :

Daily he gets one cold-pressed black cumin seed oil cap from Amazing Herbs, it contains cancer fighting compound thymoquinone.

Until two weeks ago, I was giving him 1 ½ tablespoons of 8 herb organic Essiac tea from Swanson.  It contains the whole root of sheep sorrel.

I was giving him this with his b17, 10cc twice daily.  I stopped giving him it when I started giving him pawpaw, as the kelp in the Essiac blend is thought to make the pawpaw less effective.

For two weeks I have been giving him pawpaw.  It is a strong natural chemotherapy compound which kills cancer cells.  It was studied by a professor at Purdue University for over 20 years.  The professor Dr. Jerry McLaughlin studied over 3,500 plants and found pawpaw to be the most effective cancer killing plant.  It has over 50 cancer fighting compounds, whereas a chemotheraphy drug has one.  It is the only substance natural or man-made to be effective in killing drug resistant cancer cells. I purchased it from Nature’s Sunshine: http://www.amazon.com/Natures-Sunshine-Paw-Cell-Reg-caps/dp/B001X04STA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1384156624&sr=8-2&keywords=pawpaw

Pawpaw is an emetic, meaning at certain dosages it makes one vomit.  If it causes vomiting, then reduce the amount given until vomiting stops.  The size of the pills are 00 from the bottle, and caused Moosie to vomit, so I purchased size 3 pill capsules.  http://www.amazon.com/Gelatin-Extra-Small-Empty-Capsules/dp/B009K6YXFI/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1384156755&sr=8-3&keywords=size+3+gelatin+capsules
I fill the larger half of the size 3 pills with pawpaw, and he receives one size 3 pill every 6 hours (4x a day).  Dr. Jerry McLaughlin  has stated it is best to give every 6 hours as the compound will stay elevated in the blood.  I will give Moosie pawpaw for 8 weeks, then probably give it to him for one week a month.

Here’s info on pawpaw:
mixed with half of a sheep sorrel pill(it is not sheep sorrel root which is better, but I did not find out until after I ordered it.)  http://www.amazon.com/Spectrum-Sheep-Sorrel-Swanson-Premium/dp/B00392KUVA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1384157085&sr=8-1&keywords=sheep+sorrel

I open the two pills and combine them together into an empty size 0 or 00 gelatin capsule (left over from the empty unused pawpaw capsule)

The Goji berry contains germanium which kills cancer cells.  It is also a powerful antioxidant and has a good source of vitamin c.

I will probably place him on Low Dose Naltrexone(LDN).  I do not want to find a holistic vet, so have contacted Dr. Sasan Haghighat who provides phone consultations to vets for a fee.

I will have him contact my vet to inform him about LDN, and so he may be able to write me a prescription.

I may also give Moosie organic sulfur at a later date, after I do more research about it.  It can turn cancer cells into normal cells.

I hope this info is able to help others.
-Dave

  1. INteresting. I found your blog while googling reviews on Life Gold.. as my 9 year old maine coon was just diagnosed with Malignant Melanoma. We have done 2 surgeries, one successful in removing the tumor, one not. I've had 2nd opinions... with both vets telling me nothing left to do but "wait and see". We only have 1 holistic veterinarian in Winnipeg, and not only is she extremely expensive, she's also booked up for weeks. I've started my boy on grain free canned food, omega 3 + 6 supplements, and now Life Gold. I"ll continue to read your blog for updates, and would appreciate a list of the supplements and food you are using in your situation (maybe they are on here but i haven't read the whole thing yet!). If you could email me, maybe we could share further? batgirl_273@hotmail.com

    1. Hello! Aww your poor kitty. I hate that I hear about all of these reports on cats that develop cancer, it's truly awful; however, I am glad to see that owners such as yourself are taking action against it.

I hope you've had a chance to review the pages in this blog. On a few occasions I've listed the supplements Weasel is on; however, I will list them again here in case it not only helps you but others as well.

I've tried numerous things and failed on a few attempts due to Weasel's finicky nature. This is a bit of what he's currently on, which would address your cat's cancer as well (it's not specific to pancreatic cancer) and what he 'should' be on that would help you:

      - Essiac Tea - although the ingredients are the same as in Life Gold, if you prepare it yourself, making smaller batches and place it in Mason jars (stored in your fridge), I believe that to be an important add on to your regime. My cat receives a tablespoon of Essiac Tea in its concentrated form every day, along with the Life Gold.
      - Low Dose Naltrexone. Probably the most powerful item out of anything else listed. I recommend you contact a holistic vet, perhaps in another city and have them connect with a local traditional vet to make the prescription for you (or contact Dr. Haghighat here for advice). Although a traditional vet is more than capable of doing so, they likely are not familiar with LDN. It's a human prescription so it's somewhat easily obtainable. I recommend the dermal form of it.
      - Curcumin. Although Weasel decided he wouldn't take this, many cats will and it shrinks tumours. If your cat is willing to try this, that is fantastic.
      - Amino B-Plex twice a day - 1/3 of a syringe. This will give the required vitamin B that's needed.
      - Nu-Pet Feline Granular - a powerful blend of vitamins and antioxidants to boost the immune system.

      Specific to melanoma:
      - Take Schuessler cell salts #12 Silicea (http://well.ca/products/hylands-silicea-6x-cell-salts_20926.html)
      - and Schuessler cell salts #3 Calc Sulph (couldn't find a Canadian supplier but here is a US one: http://www.swansonvitamins.com/hylands-3-calc-sulph-6x-cell-salts-500-tabs)
      - and Schuessler cell salts #6 Kali Phos (http://well.ca/products/hylands-kali-phosphoricum-6x-cell_20880.html)

To learn more about what the cell salts target, here are some brief descriptions: http://medicine4life.ca/2012/07/schuessler-cell-salts-tissue-salts/

I would read my latest post above and investigate into Pawpaw as well which I have heard positive things about. I haven't tried it myself though to truly speak to its effectiveness.

It's possible that the holistic vet you spoke of who's booked solid, may speak to you over the phone and give advice on a course of action as well.

Don't give up yet, and ignore comments about 'wait and see', which is what I was told back in February. If you take action in a similar fashion to what I did, I believe you will start seeing a successful outcome. :)

  2. I sure hope so. I will take this list of things and try to find places to get it. I found curcumin, but I didn't know if there was a liquid form. I could only find capsules, and a huge bottle of 120. So I'll keep looking. My Life Gold will be here today, so I'll get him started on that. I find Bosco won't eat his food unless he's really hungry, once I've added something to it... right now, he's turned off by the omega oil i've put in there... it smells like tea, and I guess he is turned off by that.

Do you know if I can get most of this stuff at a health food store, like GNC? I'm having a hard time finding Essiac Tea and never even heard about the cell salts so I'll have to look for those! I set up a gofundme account for Bosco's treatment, but maybe I'll also have to do a blog on his progress because I fully hope him to be here 1 year from now!!!! :)

    1. Hey!

I'm not certain about the Curcumin (I have the tablet form); however, to answer your question about a health food store. It is quite possible. There is one down the street from me in Toronto that sells a large portion of what I use. For the rest I do online searches and purchase from reputable online retailers (one can do a search on reviews if there are concerns). I try to list the links of where I purchase items along the side of my blog under 'useful links' or occasionally in blog posts. Let me know if you need me to provide any links though.

  3. where do i even get essiac tea from?! i'm finding a bunch of websites but they all look fake. I've called a few stores around town, no one's heard of it.

    1. Hi there!

I more or less went with my 'gut' on where to purchase it online. The simplicity of a website is often indicative of professionalism. If you see a lot of flashing ads along the side, chances are it's not that reputable. As such, I've been using Essiac West (if you visit their site you can see that they're focused on information and not advertising which is a good sign). The link to their site is on my list of 'useful links' along the side of the blog. So far, I have no complaints with the quality. It seems to be working well.

    1. Oh that's absolutely wonderful that you started a blog as well. I think documenting one's experiences helps others tremendously. I read what you wrote and it brought tears to my eyes as Bosco looks like he's an absolute gem. He is positively adorable. I really hope that you see some success with your treatments. I also hope that you're able to obtain low dose naltrexone at some point. If you haven't done so yet, please search on articles of LDN treating cancer. The results are outstanding.

You sound like an amazing owner. Kindess such as yours really makes a difference in animals' lives.

I'm going to post a link to your blog off of mine as it may help people who come here to find answers.

  5. Hi Melissa! What type of pancreatic cancer has Weasel been diagnosed with? My sweet baby was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer (specifically adenocarcinoma) and the vet said this type is particularly agressive and there might not be anything I can do

    1. Hi Lindsey,

Don't listen to anyone. I was told the same information and yes, Weasel was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma - the aggressive version. I was also told that I needed to perform surgery right away if there was any hope in controlling the disease - $5000 spent just like that. Um no, not even remotely affordable.

I'm not sure how far the cancer has progressed in your fur baby, but I say to never give up until it's obvious that your kitty is ready to give up and believe me, they're fighters. Just follow the regime I'm on, and what others have suggested (which I posted not too long ago as well) and you may see your kitty's disposition improve - if for nothing else, you're providing quality of life :).

  6. Melissa,
Even though what you endured was painful, I thank you very much for this blog. It's extremely useful and quite a rarity on the web. My 11 year old cat was found to have a "mass" attached to his pancreas. Vets basically sent me home with painkillers and a bleak prognosis. I currently have him on ES Clear, Milk Thistle, Curcumin, Reiki Mushrooms and Flax Oil. My cat has responded pretty well, but today was quite a bleak day as he barely touched his food. I live in a place without easy access to Naltrexone...and holistic vets are a rarity too. Is there anything else you suggest? And can I write to you more with queries? Thank you...Scott

    1. Hello Scott! My apologies for the delayed response. I'm so very very sorry you're going through this painful ordeal with your kitty. Reading your post takes me back to that ordeal and the emotional rollercoaster it created; however, I'm very pleased to hear that my blog has been of support and use to you. I sincerely hope it provides many of the answers you need.

It's a shame that vets don't understand how important it is to have hope and to persevere. I had two wonderful years with Weasel so the efforts we put forth were extremely important and gave our little family invaluable extra time together.

As the Naltrexone was an important addition in the regime, I would suggest you connect with Dr. Sasan Haghighat to see if he can do a phone consultation with you. Depending on where you live, he may be able to send a prescription to a nearby pharmacy for you pick up the Naltrexone. He may also have other helpful advice and be willing to work with your vet to offer 'comfort aid' which a traditional vet may accept. Here is the url to his website: http://www.holistic-vet.ca/

While this is a matter I take great passion in and would love to help you with, I'm unfortunately in the midst of another adventure in my life that is taking up my time, namely, contending with a dishonest contractor who left us high and dry on a massive renovation project. This is while I'm trying to raise two small children. Needless to say, my online presence has dropped off. It may be many months before I can resurface unfortunately. I do however believe that Dr. Haghighat can be a vital resource in answering your inquiries. He has a heart of gold when it comes to our fur babies :). Best of luck and please keep us updated your kitty's progress!

    2. just saw this today. My 12yo moggie has pulmonary edema secondary to probably some cancer somewhere as yet undetermined. anyway if you can't get the med down her, dissolve it in some DMSO gel and put it on the cats ear. Also you can get naltrexone following links on the LDN science website.

    3. Thank you for the valuable tip. I'm sure others will find it to be quite helpful. Unfortunately it's too late for me; however, I am currently facing cancer yet again with my second kitty - Weasel's brother. It's horrible to go through this ordeal again. He has an aggressive form of oral cancer which I detected with only weeks left it would seem so none of the treatments I learned through Weasel would be effective at this point. Time is not on our side.

I wish you all the best with treating moggie. I along with so many others who come to this site understand how heartbreaking it is to go through this.

  7. L-Lysine is also very very supportive for the immune system. I give my cat 500mg crushed tablet with wet food as he battles FIV and it has saved his life!! Very easy. I had mentioned it to the vet and they said well yes as a matter of fact that’s the only remedy that they knew would be helpful. If I hadn’t said anything they never would have suggested it -just ticks me off!
